Videos more videos Biography Rachel Hurd-Wood is an English child actress. She is best known for her debut film role as Wendy Darling in the film Peter Pan. Rachel Clare Hurd-Wood was born on 17 August 1990 in London, England to Phillip and Sarah Hurd-Wood. Her father has been involved with the entertainment industry as a performer, scriptwriter, and voice-over artist for commercials. Rachel was influenced by his work and took an active interest in acting from a young age. She was a member of a drama club in her school. When she was in her second grade, she acted in a stage production for the club. When she was eight years old, her family shifted to Surrey. As children often do, Rachel was soon on to another passion; she was fascinated by dolphins and wanted to be a marine biologist. After graduating from high school, she joined the Godalming College. However, destiny had other plans for her. Her grandparents saw an advertisement on television for an open casting call for the role of Wendy Darling in the film version of J.M. Barrie's book, Peter Pan. They thought Rachel would be perfect for the role and called her mother to suggest that Rachel should try for the role. Rachel next went through three sessions in the audition. She never really thought she would get the role. But to her surprise, she was selected to play the character of Wendy in a search that was carried out in three continents. Rachel next went to Australia for the shooting along with other members of the cast, such as Jason Isaacs and Jeremy Sumpter (who played Peter Pan). The film was directed by P.J. Hogan and had a budget of $140 million. The shooting took eight months and the film was released in December 2003 around Christmas. It quickly became a box-office hit and made around $122 million. It probably would have made more had it not been for the release of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King around the same time. Though the film did not get back its investment, Rachel got more than what she had expected. In her very first acting role, she managed to achieve what most artists her age can only dream of. It was not long before she landed more acting roles. In 2004, Rachel acted in the BBC television film Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Silk Stocking along with Rupert Everett. In 2005, Rachel ventured into Hollywood when she was cast as Betsy Bell in the film An American Haunting along with Donald Sutherland and Sissy Spacek. In 2006, Rachel played the role of Laure Richis in Perfume: The Story of a Murderer opposite Dustin Hoffman.
