Divide and Conquer

Divide and Conquer Since Danni Leigh's brand of retro honky-tonk with rock attitude has so frequently earned her comparisons with Dwight Yoakam, her collaboration here with Yoakam's producer-bandleader Pete Anderson would seem to be a natural fit. Yet the results sound less like a musical progression than a stylistic smorgasbord. With the 10 tracks failing to establish a coherent identity, she bounces from hillbilly hardcore ("He Used to Say That to Me") to torch balladry ("My Last Chance Is Gone") to rock anthemry ("Somebody Oughta Do Something") to troubadour folk ("Far Cry from Here") to collegiate pop ("Don't Feel Like Crying"). A couple of cuts even sneak in a bit of reggae guitar. Leigh cowrote two of the better songs on the album, while taking three from the songbook of Jim Lauderdale. Though the photos on the CD package exude plenty of star aura, the grooves would benefit from more unified artistic substance. --Don McLeese
