Hymns Corey Glover's long-awaited solo debut is a disappointing, schizophrenic affair. The former Living Colour frontman sure can sing, but he can't seem to settle on a direction; the hard rock posturings of "Do You First, Then Do Myself" and "Sermon" clash with the sweet, smooth offerings of "Only Time Will Tell" and the overwrought "Hot Buttered Soul" (which throws a stolen Isaac Hayes title against an Al Green backdrop). Lyrically, Glover is also frustratingly derivative. He may see that as his way of offering props, but old soul fans will just find it tiresome. There are some fine songs lurking around here, including "Little Girl" and "Sidewalk Angel," but nothing grabs the way his fierce work with Living Colour did. --Michael Ruby
