Search for Paradise (CD + Bonus DVD)
It's not surprising that a middle-aged British miserabilist has-been like David Gedge made his home in rainy Seattle in the mid 1990s. And while his new band Cinerama sounded a bit like his old group the Wedding Present (who'd actually had hits in the U.K.) and it transpired that they weren't nearly as good, that's just the way of the washed-up pop star, isn't it? What was surprising is that when Gedge decided to reform the Wedding Present in 2004, they were in some ways better than they'd been before: ballsier, less precious, and more world-weary, with lyrics worth fawning over. The first disc on Paradise collects the first three singles of the reformed version of the group, adding three previously unreleased acoustic versions. The second disc, a DVD, has rarely seen videos for the tunes. On "I'm From Further North Than You," when Gedge sings "When we bought that weird pornography, yeah that was a good day/The first time I saw your red bikini I just couldn't help but stare," you just wish he'd go back and rewrite the lyrics for half your favorite indie-pop acts, including Luna. --Mike McGonigal
