Whisper That Way

Whisper That Way The degree to which you will enjoy Jeff Timmons' Whisper That Way depends a great deal on your station in life: Unless you're part of a swooning mother/daughter pair that greatly regrets the demise of the dippy boy-band craze, for instance, you're apt to scoff at Timmons and dismiss his first solo venture as trite, overproduced, borderline pathetic piffle. On the other hand, if you gave the post-'N Sync Justin Timberlake a try and liked what you heard--found yourself thinking, "Hey, that cute guy from 98 Degrees ought to try something like this," even--then you're in luck. Because Timberlake's influence towers huge over Whisper That Way, from the blue-eyed soul grooves of first track "Favorite Star" to the tender Romeo ballads, of which there is an abundance ("Be The One," featuring the piano work of Jim Brickman, will be a favorite). For those of us not giddy with delight over this disc, a funny thing happens on the way to tossing Timmons into the been-there, done-that pile, and it goes by the title "Baby J." Here, on the only track for which Timmons claims solo writing credit, we experience a lullaby for Timmons' son. It's harpy and weepy and heartfelt in a genuinely grown-up way and, given the right recognition, it could enact a 360-degree turn in the career of this former poster boy. --Tammy La Gorce
