Regreso el Jefe
No one is likely going to challenge Elvis Crespo's claim to the king-of-merengeue throne. But he lets us know who's top dog, anyway, on comeback disc Regreso el Jefe (The Boss Has Returned). It's his first effort in three years but also signifies a return to artistic form after a few lukewarm releases. Regreso el Jefe is also Crespo's first release under the reggaeton-heavy Machete Music banner, but don't expect any awkward pairings. There are a few urban flourishes and harder edges on tunes "Bambaribiri" and "Ito Ito Bonito," but that's the extent of the makeover. It's business as usual on much of the disc, which keeps Crespo at the forefront. He meshes effortlessly with the swaying merengue grooves, particularly on joyous title track "La Foto Se Me Borro." A welcome return from a reliably electric entertainer. --Joey Guerra
