Sweet Danger
Like so many country veterans who have seen their airplay diminish with the music's changing demographics, Suzy Bogguss has begun targeting a different listenership--in this case, the cappuccino crowd. Here, she strays farther than ever from country convention with arrangements that suggest smooth jazz with a breezy Brazilian lilt. She receives a writing credit on most of the material, which ranges from the sophisticated supper-club bluesiness of "Chain Lover" and the midtempo "Baby July," with minimal piano backing, to the melancholy, contemplative balladry of "It's Not Gonna Happen Today." An unexpected highlight is her stripped-down version of "If You Leave Me Now," which really gets to the heart of a song that sounded schmaltzy in Chicago's original. Whether this is a new career direction or simply a side excursion, it shows that the supple singer has plenty of versatility beyond country. --Don McLeese
