It's About Time
Though his baritone is one of the brawnier voices in contemporary country, Tracy Byrd is a softie at heart. At least such is the impression left by the Texan's seventh album (and first for RCA), filled with midtempo balladry that showcases his sensitive side. Whether he's testifying to the love that survives a marital split on "Put Your Hand in Mine," reminding himself to stop and smell the roses on the title cut, or celebrating the redemptive support of a good woman on "Proud of Me," Byrd sings with a conviction that makes the most sentimental cliché ring true. The Texas shuffle of "Undo the Right" and the Cajun-spiced "Something to Brag About" (with Wayne Toups on accordion) provide dance-floor-friendly changes of pace. --Don McLeese
