Alberta-born Carolyn Dawn Johnson's beguiling debut album is the culmination of a several-year whirlwind apprenticeship in Nashville as a songwriter (she penned "Single White Female," a chart-topper for Chely Wright) and studio harmony singer for everyone from Patty Loveless to Kenny Rogers. No surprise that her own first album (for which she wrote or cowrote all 11 songs and coproduced with Paul Worley) is such an assured, savvy, yet heartfelt collection. Johnson's supple, sweetly youthful voice imbues even ordinary coming-of-age love songs like "Just Another Girl," "You Are," and "I Don't Want You to Go" with earnest hopefulness and exhilarating energy. These and other songs, like the saucy, strutting "A Little Bit of This, A Little Bit of That," are also adorned with Johnson's delicious trills, falsettos, and overdubbed harmonies. Yet on a pair of songs about coming to terms with death and loss--"Masterpiece" and the title tune, which is about the passing of her brother--Johnson plumbs more emotional depths, suggesting that she's really only scratched the surface with her fine debut. --Bob Allen
