An emphasis on science and reason firmly closed the door on the middle ages and set the stage for a new era of revolution, social change and scientific progress. Using examples from our extensive collection of paintings from the period alongside interactive exhibits, the Georgian Gallery offers visitors the opportunity to explore this exciting time in history.Works on display include those by artists such as Thomas Gainsborough and Johann Zoffany, and reflect the emphasis on portraiture and the growing interest in landscape painting. In addition, the gallery contains a number of specially-commissioned pieces of furniture in the Georgian style. These provide a hands-on look at key themes of the day, from scientific discoveries to the scandals of the theatrical world, and offer a flavour of life in the 18th century.
