 | Mulatu Astatke - Yegelle Tezeta (1974) Mulatu Astatke (also written Astatqé on French releases) is arguably one of the most influential and legendary musicians from Ethiopia. During the 1960s, he studied music abroad in London, Boston, and New York. He then returned home to Ethiopia armed with a love for jazz and Latin music. There he blended Ethiopian traditional music with the Latin-jazz he was so fond of to create a unique hybrid he called Ethio-jazz. Mulatu Astatke is first and foremost a composer but also a multi-instrumentalist, playing the vibraphone, keyboards and organs. He is further credited as having established congas and bongos, instruments normally central to Latin styles, in Ethiopian music. However, as Ethiopian songs traditionally focused on vocals his greatest contribution to the music of his country was introducing a new focus on instrumentation. Three of his LPs were recorded in New York City his first two, Afro-Latin Soul Volumes 1 & 2 in 1966, plus later Mulatu of Ethiopia in 1972. The bulk of his output was on Amha Records (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia) on which he released several 7 singles as well as one LP in 1974 entitled Yekatit Ethio-Jazz. Of late, Mulatu Astatke has been the center of renewed attention in the West through a compilation on the Parisian series Ethiopiques (Buda Musique) and a 10 4-track compilation on the Soundway label out of Brighton England. Most notably, a number of his tracks were also featured in director Jim Jarmushs 2005 independent film Broken Flowers with actors ... | | LaLaLa (feat. Boasting a brilliant ensemble cast, the film is inspired by a Chinese proverb that breaks life down into four key emotions -- Happiness, Sorrow, Pleasure, and Love -- and each vignette is built around a character who embodies one of these key emotions. In "Happiness," 2006 Best Actor Oscar Winner Forest Whitaker stars as a timid banker who impulsively bets every cent he has, and then some, on a supposedly "sure thing." In "Sorrow," Sarah Michelle Gellar is a rising pop star whose contract falls under the control of a ruthless crime boss (Oscar-nominee Andy Garcia), and his corrupt nephew (Emile Hirsch). In "Pleasure," Brendan Fraser stars as a man who can see into the future of everyone he meets, but is totally blind when it comes to his own; and in "Love," Kevin Bacon plays a doctor who pines for a woman he can never possess (Julie Delpy), only to find that he suddenly holds her life in his hands. Though each of the characters believes that his or her life is governed by hazard and chance, their unbridled emotions, impulsive choices, and reckless moves all prove one universal truth: character is destiny, and each of us makes our own fate. | | Before Sunrise (1995) - one of the best film scenes ever "There's wind that blows in from the north And it says that loving takes this course Come here, come here No I'm not impossible to touch I have never wanted you so much Come here, come here Have I never laid down by your side Baby, let's forget about this pride Come here, come here Well I'm in no hurry Don't have to run away this time I know you're timid. But it's gonna be all right this time..." I am Polish and "Before Sunrise" (and "Before Sunset" afterwards) were aired on one of the TV channels a few weeks ago. Both the films are excellent; the acting skills of Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke blossom during the long shots taken in Vienna & Paris. This one special scene though is even better than the rest of the film. It is absolutely exquisite. Those eyes, this music ("Come Here" by Kath Bloom), this amazing atmosphere of a requited feeling and finally finding a real soulmate... it is certainly one of the best scenes that have ever been created; Richard Linklater and the actors succeeded in making something that the vast majority of even high-budget films lack. The world is huge, I am just 19, now moving to Warsaw to study there. I don't know what will happen in my life, I don't know where will its paths lead me. I don't know whether I'll ever meet a person I could socialise with as much as this pair did, I don't know if any adventure of such enormous beauty will ever happen to me... What I know is that I will hold this scene and film in my memory all throughout my life ... | | Julie Delpy - [Jun-2004] - interview (part 1) [25-Jun-2004] Before Sunset | | Mulatu Astatke "Yekatit" (February) (1974) Mulatu Astatke (also written Astatqé on French releases) is arguably one of the most influential and legendary musicians from Ethiopia.
