Hachik?, a veces conocido en japonés como ????? (Hachik?, el perro fiel), era un perro de raza Akita nacido en noviembre de 1923 en la ciudad de Odate (Prefectura de Akita, Japón). En 1924 fue trasladado a Tokio por su amo, Eisabur? Ueno, un profesor del departamento de agricultura de la Universidad de Tokio. Desde la Prefectura de Akita hasta la estación de Shibuya viajó durante dos días en tren, en una caja. Cuando lo fueron a retirar sirvientes del profesor, estos creyeron que el perro estaba muerto. Sin embargo, cuando llegaron a la casa, el profesor le acercó al perro un vaso con leche, y éste se reanimó. El profesor lo cargó en sus brazos y notó que las piernas delanteras estaban levemente desviadas, por lo cual decidió llamarlo Hachi (ocho en japonés) por la similitud con una de las partes del Kanji (letra japonesa) que sirve para representar al número ocho.
