 | New York, I Love You Movie Trailer This October, join a whole array of stars including Natalie Portman, Orlando Bloom and Hayden Christiansen in New York, I Love You, a massive interconnected love story. When you put a whole bunch of people in a relatively confined space--which is New York in a nutshell--you're going to get a whole lot of friction, and occasionally, romance. And as we find in a series of vaguely interconnected tales, what will amaze you most is how just one connection can start something so much greater than itself. Check out the trailer. I know it's all a little vague, especially for a movie coming out in under a month, but they say that mystery is a big part of romance. LINK: tinyurl.com Peggy Lee's alluring tone, distinctive delivery, breadth of material, and ability to write many of her own songs made her one of the most captivating artists of the vocal era, from her breakthrough on the Benny Goodman hit "Why Don't You Do Right" to her many solo successes, singles including "Mañana," "Lover" and "Fever" that showed her bewitching vocal power, a balance between sultry swing and impeccable musicianship. Born Norma Egstrom in Jamestown, North Dakota, she suffered the death of her mother at the age of four and endured a difficult stepmother after her father remarried. Given her sense of swing by listening to Count Basie on the radio, she taught herself to sing and made her radio debut at the age of 14. She made the jump to Fargo (where she was christened Peggy Lee), then to Minneapolis and St. Louis to sing with a regional band. Lee twice journeyed to Hollywood to make her fortune, but returned unsuccessful from both trips. She finally got her big break in 1941, when a vocal group she worked with began appearing at a club in Chicago. While there, she was heard by Benny Goodman, whose regular vocalist Helen Forrest was about to leave his band.  | Local Hero (HD) Local Hero is a 1983 Scottish film starring Peter Riegert, Denis Lawson, Peter Capaldi and Burt Lancaster. It was directed by Bill Forsyth and produced by David Puttnam. The film is set in the fictional fishing village of Ferness on the west coast of Scotland. A young representative of an American oil company is sent to the village on a mission. The film features a notable ensemble of character parts. The film's soundtrack, which outsold the film itself, was written by Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits, and is considered amongst his best work. This has led to the popularity of the film with fans of the band; Knopfler has since performed an arrangement of the main theme music ("Going Home") as an encore at many of his concerts.  | The Stylistics - People Make The World Go Round. The early 70's AM radio days of my childhood were verily filled with the sounds of sweet Philly soul. In the first few years when I had a radio glued to my ear -- roundabout 1972 to 1974 -- there was hardly an edition of the Top 10 that didn't include something fine from Philly, or at least something influenced by those sounds. One of the groups that rest securely in my memory is the Stylistics. 'You Are Everything' and 'You Make Me Feel Brand New' were both HUGE records, crossing over as major pop hits, led by the trademark falsetto of Russell Thompkins Jr. Ironically enough, I was oblivious to today's selection (which was a Top 40 hit) until I heard it on the soundtrack of Spike Lee's 'Crooklyn', and promptly fell in love with it. Written by Thom Bell and Linda Creed 'People Make the World Go Round' -- which appeared on the Stylistics debut LP in 1972 -- is a classic of socially conscious soul, with a twist. The songs lyrics point fingers at opposite ends of the economic spectrum, taking shots at labor unions (trash collectors and bus drivers in particular) and moving on to attack Wall Street and cigar chomping moguls who blame their troubles on hippies. The chorus: But that's what makes the world go `round The up and down, the carousel Changing people, they'll go around Go underground, young man People make the world go `round ..seems to take a kind of resigned, "it takes all kinds" tack, but then drops in the surprising suggestion to "Go underground, young man".  | NORTHERN-RARE SOUL - SWEETS - 'SOMETHING ABOUT MY BABY' SWEETS recorded on the Los Angeles Soultown label. The vinyl release is dated around 1966/67. The singers are possibly linked with the same girl group that recorded for the Valiant label in 1965...a trio that included Felice Taylor and her sisters Norma and Darlene. The Soultown label was run by aspiring LA. producer and impresario Bobby Sanders, influenced by Berry Gordy's success with Motown. The Sweets flip, 'Satisfy Me Baby', was a popular uptempo dancer on the Northern soul scene in the mid 1970's. Consequently it gained a reissued pressing on a simpler designed label. Other artists who have recorded on the same label include; Tempos, Delicates, Little Helen, Ray Agee, Travis McKinley, McKinley Twins and New Young Hearts. Also, actor Burt Ward --'Robin' in the 60's Batman series. Bobby Sanders also recorded 'The Way I Feel' on the Pick-A-Hit (100) record label. |
