Olivia de Havilland ENDURES "My Love Came Back"
Behold actress Olivia de Havilland in choice clips from "My Love Came Back" (1940)--her first film at Warner Bros. (her "home" studio) after the release of Selznick's "Gone With The Wind"; in the latter film, she had earned an Academy-Award nomination for her performance as Melanie Hamilton. She plays here a fetching fiddler named Amelia Cornell whose financial difficulties as a music-academy student are assisted?-awkwardly-?by sexagenarian school president/music-industry mogul Julius Malette (Charles Winninger). Jeffrey Lynn plays Tony Baldwin, an executive working for Malette, who falls for Amelia but suspects the nature of her relationship with his boss. Amelia boards with fellow musicians played by cute blonde Jane Wyman and swinging pianist Eddie Albert. Humorous character actor S.Z. Sakall-?aka "Cuddles"-?makes his Warner Bros. film debut as Amelia's fussy instructor at the music academy. Spring Byington, another excellent character actress, also appears. The plot is trivial. Will Amelia's reputation emerge untarnished in Tony's eyes? Will Amelia pass muster at school and in concert??especially when her pals convince her to pep up her repertoire with swing music? Will Mr. Malette be incriminated as Amelia's "sugar daddy"? Will "Cuddles" keep his cool when his orchestra starts to swing? Gone with the wind are: epic drama and a challenging role for a leading actress of proven merit. An actress who when once asked what she wanted out of life said "respect for difficult work well done."Why post clips of "My Love Came Back"? 1) It's a curiosity piece that will likely never make it to home video?and deservedly so, 2) Olivia is so darn lovely to look at circa 1940, 3) it is interesting to see the artful way in which she is convincingly presented as "playing" the violin, 4) "Cuddles" is always a gas. In the spirit of "paying the price, not counting the cost"?-a cost which included suspension by Warner Bros., [successful] court fights against them, no film work for almost an entire year-?Olivia sought and found some of the best roles of her career after 1945, with performances in "To Each His Own" (1946) and "The Heiress" (1949), respectively, earning her Oscars for Best Actress in a Leading Role. Featured here are several clips of beauty and talent united?-even in the less than inspiring context of "My Love Came Back"?-Miss Olivia de Havilland. Comments or questions are welcome; however, lewd or derogatory remarks will be cat-gutted. If it hasn't occurred by the time you read this: would you REALLY like to see "My Love Came Back" restored and released to DVD? Are you a de Havilland "completist"? Or maybe you just gotta own the Warner's debut film of "Cuddles" in a digital format?! Regardless of your reason(s), petition the studio for it!Warner Home Video Inc.4000 Warner Blvd.Burbank, CA 91522-1543CA Tel. 818-954-6000Fax 212-954-7667
