 | Dallas Braden Pitches Perfect Game Against Tampa Bay Rays Dallas Braden Pitches Perfect Game Against Tampa Bay Rays Dallas Braden tossed the second perfect game in the history of the Oakland Athletics, as they took down the Tampa Bay Rays, 4-0, in the rubber match of a three-game series. Braden put on a spectacular pitching performance Sunday afternoon, striking out six batters as the 26-year-old became the first A's pitcher to record a perfect game since Catfish Hunter accomplished the remarkable feat on May 8, 1968 against Minnesota. It was the 19th perfect game in major league history. Braden's perfect game was the 10th nine-inning no-hitter in the history of the franchise and first since Dave Stewart's feat on June 29, 1990 at Toronto. Braden needed just 109 pitches to complete his memorable day. What made his performance so sensational, was the fact that the Rays came into the game with a road record of 13-2 and MLB-best 22-8 overall record. Gabe Kapler ran the count to 3-1 in the ninth inning before grounding a ball to shortstop Cliff Pennington, who threw across the diamond for the final out of the Mother's Day perfect game. After the contest, Braden gave his grandmother a celebratory hug. Braden's mother died of melanoma when she was 39 and Braden was a senior in high school. The lefty became the first pitcher to throw a perfect game since Mark Buehrle tossed one for the Chicago White Sox on July 23, 2009. Ironically, Buehrle's performance was against the Rays. A ninth-round pick of Oakland in the 2004 draft, Braden ... |
