LINK: tinyurl.com One of a spate of teen idols to come out of Philadelphia in the 1950s and 1960s, Frankie Avalon--unlike many of the others--actually had a musical background, having been taught to play the trumpet at a very young age by his father. As a youth Avalon performed in local clubs and theaters. He won a local TV talent contest playing a trumpet solo. One day in 1952 he was performing at a private party held for singer Al Martino. A talent scout who was also at the party was impressed enough by Avalon to get him an appearance on Jackie Gleason's TV show, which led to more television appearances, and in 1954 he cut his own record on a small local label. At age 12 he was in a band called Rocco and the Saints, which included another soon-to-be famous teen singer, Bobby Rydell. Avalon eventually landed a recording contract with Philadelphia's Chancellor Records, and he recorded "Cupid" and "Teacher's Pet". These records got him his first movie role, a small part in Jamboree (1957) designed to promote "Teacher's Pet." His next record was "De De Dinah", a song written by his managers (and one for which he had so little respect that he pinched his nose while recording it, resulting in its extremely nasal sound). That means "Who will it be" ... who will be my next love after the one I lost. Spanish lyrics were added. In America original English words were written and the title became Sway. It became a #15 hit for Dean Martin in 1954, and #21 for Eileen Bartin. The song went on to become a popular part of the English repertoire. Bobby Rydell had a big hit with it in 1960, in the rock+roll era. In 1979 he hit big again with a popular disco version. Lately artists like the PussyCat Dolls have made good recordings. Selections: 1) Quien Sera by the Ruiz orchestra 2) Quien Sera by Eydie Gorme sung in Spanish and English, from her rare 1960 United Artists LP "I Feel So Spanish" 3) Sway - Bobby Rydell 1960 #14, from original vinyl 4) Sway disco version by Rydell. Edited and shortened here from 5:10. My favorite of all is Rydell's 1960. It has that intriguing female chorus harmony, that was sometimes used at the time, also found on Bobby Darin's "Nature Boy" and Donnie Brooks' "Mission Bell". Julie London did an excellent rendition on her rare album "Latin In a Satin Mood". | | Bobby Rydell - Diana w/ LYRICS Diana - "Bobby Rydell" Year Song Released 1965 I'm so young, and you're so old This, my darling, I've been told I don't care, just what they say 'Cause forever, I will pray You and I, will be as free As the birds, up in the trees Oh, Oh please stay by me. LINK: tinyurl.com Bobby Rydell was born Robert Ridarelli in Philadelphia. It was his father who encouraged him to pursue a career in show business. At the age of four, Rydell would sit in front of the TV and impersonate such performers as Milton Berle, Louis Prima and Johnny Ray. He also admired drummer Gene Krupa and began playing the drums at the age of six. At the age of seven and with his father's encouragement, Rydell began performing in nightclubs in Philadelphia. In 1950, Bobby Rydell entered the amateur show of Paul Whiteman; his first-place win gained him a regular part on the show. He stayed with the Whiteman show for three years and then went to join several local bands in Philadelphia. It was here too that Bobby Ridarelli became the easier-to-pronounce Bobby Rydell. At 16 he began playing with local groups, landing a spot as a drummer for Rocco and the Saints. (Frankie Avalon, another Philadelphia-born musician, played trumpet for the group.) While with the band, Rydell signed a recording contract with Cameo/Parkway Records in Philadelphia. His hit "Kissin' Time," recorded in the summer of 1959, launched his musical career and made him a teen idol at the age of 17. After making his first hit recording, he pursued a solo career, performing at the Copacabana in New York in 1961, where he ... | | Frankie Avalon - Venus PLEASE NOTE: I divided my uploads between multiple channels, Bookmark this link in your browser for instant access to an index with links to all of John1948's oldies classics.
