Claude Monet (French pronounced [klod m?n?]) also known as Oscar-Claude Monet or Claude Oscar Monet (November 14, 1840 -- December 5, 1926)[1] was a founder of French impressionist painting, and the most consistent and prolific practitioner of the movement's philosophy of expressing one's perceptions before nature, especially as applied to plein-air landscape painting.[2] The term Impressionism is derived from the title of his painting Impression, Sunrise. Monet was born on November 14, 1840 on the fifth floor of 45 rue Laffitte, in the ninth arrondissement of Paris.[3] He was the second son of Claude-Adolphe and Louise-Justine Aubrée Monet, both of them second-generation Parisians. On May 20, 1841, he was baptized in the local parish church, Notre-Dame-de-Lorette as Oscar-Claude. [3] In 1845, his family moved to Le Havre in Normandy. His father wanted him to go into the family grocery store business, but Claude Monet wanted to become an artist. His mother was a singer. On the first of April 1851, Monet entered the Le Havre secondary school of the arts. He first became known locally for his charcoal caricatures, which he would sell for ten to twenty francs. Monet also undertook his first drawing lessons from Jacques-François Ochard, a former student of Jacques-Louis David.  | Monet's Water Lilies BRETT MARVIN Art Painting Le bassin aux nympheas, one of four pieces from the French impressionist's water lily series, almost doubled the previous record price for a Monet, the £20.9 million for his 1873 work Le Pont du Chemin de Fer a Argenteuil which sold in May. The Monet canvas, which was displayed in front of a packed auction house, was sold to a telephone bidder. The signed and dated 1919 painting has only been seen in Unlike most of his later works which remained unfinished in his studio after his death, the water-lily series was completed in his lifetime. One is in New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, another was divided and a third is in a private collection. Before the auction, Olivier Camu, Christie's director and head of Impressionist and Modern Art, described it as "the greatest of Claude Monet's water-lily pictures to be offered at auction in Europe". It was the star lot of Christie's Impressionist and Modern Art Evening Sale that also featured works by Picasso, Matisse, Kandinsky, Renoir, Degas and Henry Moore. The sale was initially expected to fetch £90 million but - as has become familiar in auction rooms this summer - that was set to be easily exceeded. Talk at Christie's was of petro-dollars from Russia and the Middle East pushing prices yet higher and higher.  | Peintures de Johan Barthold Jongkind_0001.wmv Joseph Haydn Johan Barthold Jongkind (1819 -- 1891) peintre paysagiste et graveur hollandais, l'un des précurseurs de l'impressionnisme. Solitaire, il vécut principalement en France, estimé de tous. Manet l'appelait « le père du paysage moderne ». Son audace annonçait dès 1860 l'impressionnisme. En outre, il contribua à faire que l'aquarelle devienne un art en soi pour tous. Il portera un regard neuf et particulier sur Paris avec une belle maîtrise de la luminosité et il s'éprendra de la Côte Normande. Monet écrira qu'il fut après Boudin son maître et qu'il lui doit « l'éducation définitive de son ?il ». Emile Zola écrira en 1872 dans les Lettres de Paris : « Tout le monde connaît ses marines, ses vues de Hollande.. Je veux parler des quelques coins de Paris qu'il a peints dans ces dernières années.  | HONFLEUR NORMANDIE 13 septembre 2011 HONFLEUR est une commune portuaire normande (département du Calvados) située sur la rive sud de l'estuaire de la Seine, en face du Havre, tout près du débouché du pont de Normandie. Ses habitants sont les Honfleurais. Elle est surtout connue pour son vieux port pittoresque, caractérisé par ses maisons aux façades recouvertes d'ardoises, et pour avoir été maintes fois représentée par des artistes, dont notamment Gustave Courbet, Eugène Boudin, Claude Monet et Johan Barthold Jongkind, formant l'École de Honfleur qui contribua à l'apparition du mouvement impressionniste.
