Diego Velázquez Artist Review of Diego Velazquez
http://sypernet.com/Diego_Velazquez.php1.Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez (June 6, 1599 -- August 6, 1660), (He to be 61 years old and 2 months to the day) commonly referred to as Diego Velázquez, was a Spanish painter who was the leading artist in the court of King Philip IV (fourth). He was an individualistic artist of the contemporary baroque period, important as a portrait artist. In addition to numerous renditions of scenes of historical and cultural significance, he painted scores of portraits of the Spanish royal family, other notable European figures, and commoners, culminating in the production of his masterpiece Las Meninas (1656).From the first quarter of the nineteenth century, Velázquez's artwork was a model for the realist and impressionist painters, in particular Édouard Manet. Since that time, more modern artists, including Spain's Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí, as well as the Anglo-Irish painter Francis Bacon, have paid tribute to Velázquez by recreating several of his most famous works.2.Vieja friendo huevos (1618, English: An Old Woman Frying Eggs)3.Portrait of Philip IV - Philip IV's reign, after a few years of inconclusive successes, was characterized by political and military decay and adversity. He has been held responsible for the decline of Spain, which was mostly due, however, to organic causes largely beyond the control of any one ruler.4.Los borrachos (1629, English: The Feast of Bacchus) The spirit and aim of this work are better understood from its Spanish name, Los borrachos or Los bebedores (the tipplers), who are paying mock homage to a half-naked ivy-crowned young man seated on a wine barrel.5.La rendición de Breda (1634-1635, English: The Surrender of Breda) was inspired by Velázquez's first visit to Italy, in which he accompanied Ambrogio Spinola, who conquered the Dutch city of Breda a few years prior. This masterwork depicts a transfer of the key to the city from the Dutch to the Spanish army during the Siege of Breda. It is considered one of the best of Velázquez's paintings.6. Juan de Pareja (1650) seen in this picture also a painter in his own right, but never rose to the level of his teacher and seems to have executed only minor works. He is most famous from this painting by his mentor Velazquez7. Portrait of Pablo de Valladolid, 1635, a court fool of Philip IV.8. The Portrait of Pope Innocent X is a famous oil on canvas portrait by the Spanish painter Diego Velázquez, which he finished during a trip to Italy around 1650. Many artists and art critics consider it the finest portrait ever created.9. Las Meninas (1656, English: (Spanish for) The Maids of Honour)10. Self-portrait of Diego Velázquez as a detail in Las Meninas. He sports the cross of the Order of Santiago that he was awarded in 1659. Legend has that Philip IV of Spain painted the cross over the 1656 picture.11. The importance of Velázquez's art even today is evident in considering the respect with which twentieth century painters regard his work.
