 | Johnny "Guitar" Watson: The Planet Funk "That's What Time It Is" is an awesome LP by Johnny "Guitar" Watson from 1981, produced by none other than the man of many musical pursuits, Michael "Let's All Chant" Zager, and with Herb Alpert as executive producer. It was Johnny's one and only LP for A&M and he was pleased with the move from DJM Records, at least at the time. "Thank Heavens for finally being associated with intelligent people", he wrote in the "thank you" notes. Why this LP is not out on CD (yet) is a shame. A&M Records need to put this out now! "That's What Time It Is" was a commercial failure and didn't yield any hit singles, but, oh, what a good record it is! Johnny plays guitar, moog bass, percussion and co-produced the album (with Michael Zager) and of course wrote or co-wrote nearly every track with Zager and Jolyon Skinner. Bassist Jolyon Skinner is an unsung hero who played in M-Zee Band, as well as on several Michael Zager productions and was also a successful songwriter , producer and arranger in his own right. The other musicians were James Gadson on drums, Paulinho Da Costa on percussion, Larry Williams on synthesizer, Gemi "Master Phonk" Taylor on rhythm guitar and with backing vocals by Stephanie Spruill, Marti McCall and Paulette McWilliams-Bush. Horns by Jerry Hey and Chuck Finley (trumpets), Phil Ayling (alto sax), Pete Christlieb (tenor sax), Lew McCreary (trombone). | | Johnny "Guitar" Watson: You Sexy Thing "That's What Time It Is" is an awesome LP by Johnny "Guitar" Watson from 1981, produced by none other than the man of many musical pursuits, Michael "Let's All Chant" Zager, and with Herb Alpert as executive producer.
