Die magischen Dragonballs bewahren eine unterschiedliche Anzahl an Sternen in ihrem Inneren und sind weit verstreut. Demjenigen jedoch, dem es gelingt, alle sieben Dragonballs zusammenzuführen, erscheint der heilige Drache Shenlong, der ihm einen Wunsch erfüllt. Goku erhält eines Tages von seinem Großvater Gohan (Randall Duk Kim), der ihn schon seit Jahren in der Kampfkunst unterweist, einen Dragonball geschenkt. Während er am selben Abend die Feier der attraktiven Chi Chi (Jamie Chang) besucht, in die er heimlich verliebt ist, wird das Haus des Großvaters von dem mächtigen Lord Piccolo (James Marsters) und dessen Komplizin Mai (Eriko) angegriffen.
