BEIJING ? Jackie Chan will play the wise kung-fu master in a Hollywood-Chinese remake of the 1984 hit "The Karate Kid" that kicked off filming in the Chinese capital at the weekend, a movie company publicist said Monday. Chan's young disciple in "Kung Fu Kid" will be played by Jaden Smith, the son of Hollywood superstars Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, China Film Group spokesman Weng Li told The Associated Press in a phone interview. In "The Karate Kid," Pat Morita plays the iconic building handyman Mr. Miyagi who trains one of his young tenants, portrayed by Ralph Macchio, into an accomplished fighter. The co-production between the state-run China Film Group and Columbia Pictures started shooting Saturday in Beijing, Weng said. "Kung Fu Kid" is being directed by Harald Zwart, who also directed "One Night at McCool's" and "The Pink Panther 2," Solon So, the chief executive of Chan's company, JC Group, told the AP. Jaden Smith 'stunting like his mom & dad' at THE KARATE KID World Premier
www.blacktree.tv LOS ANGELES ? "Wax on, wax off" is now "Jacket on, jacket off," and the original star of "The Karate Kid," Ralph Macchio, wasn't so sure the reboot ? starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan ? was a good idea. "It's like mixed feelings. At first, I felt old. Number one, you feel old when they start remaking your stuff," Macchio, 48, told Access Hollywood at "The Karate Kid" premiere on Monday night in LA "Once I got past the fact that there's a whole new generation, it was more about, 'OK, you can retell this story because it's a beautiful story,'" the actor, who played Daniel Larusso in the original three films, said. "It's a testament to the legacy that we created that we didn't even know we were creating. I don't look at it as the end of an era and the beginning of a new one. It's not the passing of the torch as much as it is the celebration of a great story." Macchio, who brought 14-year-son Daniel (named after his character) to the movie, recalled that the first "Karate Kid" didn't have a star-studded Hollywood premiere like Monday's lavish event. "We didn't have a big premiere for that movie, it was a little sleeper. I spoke to the writer [Robert Mark Kamen] earlier and he said, 'Tell me how the after party is. Ours lasted 26 years.'" Macchio told Access. "We didn't know what we were doing. We didn't know the magic that was happening and the Pat Morita performance [as Mr. Miyagi] and all the Cobra Kai and 'wax on, wax off' and catching flies with your ...

Jaden Smith kicks acting career into 2nd gear with The Karate Kid
"Dre Parker is a cool American kid who's left Detroit and now is just trying to make it in China," says Jaden Smith, who previously starred alongside his father in the worldwide hit The Pursuit of Happyness and now takes the star reigns himself, headlining The Karate Kid. "He's definitely having a rough time -- he feels like he just doesn't fit in. He doesn't mean to, but he gets on the bad side of some bullies. He's got no friends and nowhere to go, and that's when he finds out that his building's maintenance man, Mr. Han, is a kung fu master. Mr. Han teaches him kung fu, and they end up having a special bond between them." It's a theme that has long resonated with audiences -- and explored in the hit movie of the same title that starred Ralph Macchio and Noriyuki "Pat" Morita. Morita's portrayal of the stoic sensei, Mr. Miyagi, earned an Oscar® nomination and passed into legend. Producer Jerry Weintraub, who produced the first series of films as well as the new film, says that the story endures because its underlying story is universal. "Ultimately, it's the tale of a father and son," he says. "It's not so much about the karate. What endures, what kids look to, is the story of a boy searching for a father and a mentor." It would be up to producers Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, James Lassiter, and Ken Stovitz, as well as director Harald Zwart to bring around this new version of the classic, updating it for a new generation. "The teenagers who made the original Karate Kid ...
