Like Nightmare Alley (1947), this film tells the story of a phony spiritualist racket. The film is prominently featured in Alton's book on cinematography Painting with Light (1949). The film stars Turhan Bey, Lynn Bari, Cathy O'Donnell, and Richard Carlson. Eagle-Lion Films signed a contract with Carole Landis for the part played by Bari, but Landis committed suicide a few days before shooting began. Two years after her husband's death, Christine Faber (Lynn Bari) thinks she hears her late husband (Donald Curtis) calling out of the surf on the beach one night. She meets a tall dark man named Alexis (Turhan Bey) who seems to know all about her. After more ghostly manifestations, Christine and her younger sister (Cathy O'Donnell) become enmeshed in the strange life of Alexis; but he in turn finds himself manipulated into deeper cruelness than he had in mind. At preview screenings, audiences found some parts of the film to be funny, and therefore drew unintended laughs. Turhan Bey (born March 30, 1922) is an American actor of Turkish and Czech descent.  | The Beatles - Act Naturally The Beatles - Act Naturally (Copyright 1965 EMI Records) "Act Naturally" is a song written by Johnny Russell and Voni Morrison, originally recorded by Buck Owens and the Buckaroos, whose version reached number 1 on the Billboard Country Singles chart in 1963, his first chart-topper. In 2002, Shelly Fabian of About.com ranked the song number 169 on her list of the Top 500 Country Music Songs. The song has been covered by many other artists, including Loretta Lynn and The Beatles. Russell, originally from Mississippi, was based in Fresno, California in the early 1960s. One night, some of his friends from Oklahoma planned to do a recording session in Los Angeles and asked him to join them. In order to do so, Russell had to break a date with his then-girlfriend. "When she asked me why I was going to LA, I answered, 'They are going to put me in the movies and make a big star out of me.' We both laughed." By 1963, Russell was writing with a woman named Voni Morrison, who also worked with a Bakersfield, California-based singer named Buck Owens. After Russell played "Act Naturally" for Morrison, she thought it would be a natural for Owens, and she told Russell that she could get him to record it. Because no one had yet recorded it, and Russell had an agreement with Morrison to share songwriting credits, he gave her partial credit, though her only role in the song was submitting it to Owens.  | The Top Ten Moves of Austin Aries The first of what will likely be many revamped top tens, and what a way to start it out than with the Greatest Man Who Ever Lived(in his words, anyway). Austin Aries is arguably one of the top wrestlers in the world currently, and a former two time ROH World Heavyweight Champion. Getting his start in the MN area, Aries developed a following that eventually led him to IWA Mid-South, at the time a haven for some of wrestling's undiscovered, yet very deserving talent. There, he found moderate success, and eventually scored a tryout with ROH in March. He would also wrestled in Chicago a month later, and was slated to appear on the Generation Next show. However, Aries took his fate into his own hands, and alongside Alex Shelley, Jack Evans, and Roderick Strong, he began a rapid ascent to the top of the ROH food chain. As a part of GenNext, he primarily tagged with Roderick Strong, as well as his fellow allies in multi-man tag matches. In late 2004, Aries did the impossible, and defeated longtime ROH World Heavyweight Champion Samoa Joe for the title. Soon after, he dismissed Alex Shelley from GenNext, and went on a worldwide campaign, defending the ROH World Heavyweight Title against all comers, including Shelley. In mid-2005, his run came to an end against the departing CM Punk. There, he would refocus his efforts in a new direction.
