Florentino Ariza (interpretato dall'ottimo Javier Bardem) è un telegrafista che trova nel volto di Fermina Daza (Giovanna Mezzogiorno) il senso unico e solo della sua esistenza. Sullo sfondo di Cartagena, città resa magica dalla prosa di Gabriel Garcia Marquez -- autore del romanzo e unico legittimo erede del suo significato profondo -- il colera coglie all'improvviso i suoi impotenti "spettatori". Una malattia inesorabile che un sofisticato aristocratico -- il dottor Juvenal Urbino -- tenterà di debellare con la sua arte curativa. Ed è proprio lui a vincere le resistenze della futura promessa sposa -- l'affascinante Fermina -- sottraendola all'amore e al desiderio del giovane Florentino, deciso ad attraversare i giorni, i mesi e gli anni che lo separano da un'insperata (ri)conquista della giovane amata.L'amore ai tempi del colera, romanzo simbolo di una generazione, sbarca sullo schermo in un'operazione che risulta difficile già in partenza. Difficile per l'ovvia diversità del mezzo, di un cinema che non può che arrendersi sin dal principio di fronte alla forza di un testo complesso e meraviglioso come quello di Marquez. Detto questo, si fa quel che si può. Mike Newell è autore sagace e versatile, uno che spazia dalla commedia (Quattro matrimoni e un funerale) al gangster movie (Donnie Brasco) e che ce la mette tutta per non rendere ridicole le parole e le ossessioni dei suoi personaggi, grazie anche a un insuperabile Bardem che regge praticamente da solo la complessa struttura della pellicola. In ombra la Mezzogiorno, forse stressata da troppe ore di trucco per poi poter passare il resto del tempo a recitare. I tempi del colera fanno dunque i conti con quelli del cinema, uscendone sconfitti solo in parte, lasciando un alone di profondissimo rispetto nei confronti di un testo sacro come quello da cui trae ispirazione, ma lasciando trionfare senza resistenza (purtroppo) il lato commerciale su quello letterario.Il romanzo simbolo di una generazione assume sul grande schermo toni complessi e commerciali ma anche profondo rispetto nei confronti del testo letterario |
