| | The Howard Hawks Woman Examples of how Howard Hawks kept using the same lines and concepts for his female characters. | | RIO BRAVO, 1959 John Wayne, Dean Martin trailer Rio Bravo is a 1959 western film, directed by Howard Hawks. It stars John Wayne, Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson, with Angie Dickinson, Pedro Gonzalez Gonzalez, Estelita Rodriguez and Walter Brennan and was shot at Old Tucson Studios, just outside Tucson, Arizona.Rio Bravo is generally regarded as one of Hawks' best, and is notable for its lack of close-up shots. It features a long opening scene with absolutely no dialogue. The film was made as a response to High Noon, which is sometimes thought to be a pro-liberal and pro-socialist statement against the USA.John Wayne teamed up with director Howard Hawks to tell the story his way. Hawks was offended by High Noon as he didn't believe the marshal, played by Gary Cooper, would ask the townsfolk for help. Wayne was a conservative US patriot. It is commonly believed that Cooper alone defeated the outlaws and didn't need help from others but Will Kane's Quaker bride saves the Marshal's life by shooting and killing one of them. However it is true that in Rio Bravo Wayne is surrounded by allies--a drunk deputy, a young gunfighter, an old man and an attractive young woman--and he definitely needs their help. | | Only Angels Have Wings part 1 | | Bogart-Bacall kiss in "To have and have not" (1944) One of my favourite scenes from this great classic by Howard Hawks. Lauren Bacall was only 19 years old when she made this movie... 19! Look at her, she's pure character. I love her voice, so strong, she gives her a very tough quality. She was tall, slim, gorgeous. She hardly smiled but when she did she made us all smile. And I think Bogart was the origin of what we call "charisma" in cinema. To me he's attractive thanks to his strong personality, his sarcastic tone of voice, the intelligence that you can guess from every word he says. This is the famous "whistle" scene. But what I really love is when she sits on his knees and kisses him, all of a sudden, and he asks "what did you do that for?", "to see if I liked it" she says. One of the reasons why I love movies and why I think everyone should love them. | | Howard Hawks Club- Trailer Il trailer di un gangster movie indipendente in fase di realizzazione.Per infowww.hhcmovie.wordpress.com | | The Big Sleep (1946) 1/11 The Big Sleep (1946) "Based on Raymond Chandler's novel and directed by Howard Hawks, Humphrey Bogart plays the part of detective Philip Marlowe. Hired by the wealthy General Sternwood (Charles Waldron) to foil a blackmailer who's ensnared his youngest daughter ? wild, childlike Carmen (Martha Vickers) ? Marlowe soon finds himself both embroiled in murder and falling in love with the general's other daughter, the headstrong Vivian (Lauren Bacall). As the bodies pile up around them, the passion smolders between the rumpled shamus and the stylish thoroughbred. After playing mostly bad guys in the '30s, Bogart forged a career for himself in the 1940s as a romantic lead. Even in The Maltese Falcon, though, and Casablanca, his is an almost dour presence. There's none of that here. Bogart's Marlowe is a man relaxed with himself, not just cool, but humorous in the face of danger. One running gag has every woman he meets flirting with him and it's easy to see why ? Marlowe may be hard-boiled, but, at his heart, there is a soft center. In his scenes with Bacall, the pair virtually ignites the screen, so palpable is the heat between them." -Pam Grady, reel.comDirector/Producer: Howard HawksScreenwriter: William Faulkner, Jules Furthman, Leigh BrackettComposer: Max SteinerStarring: Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Dorothy Malone, John Ridgely, Louis Jean Heydt, Elisha Cook, Regis Toomey, Sonia Darrin, Bob Steele, Martha Vickers, Tom Rafferty, Charles Waldron, Charles D. Brown, Peggy Knudsen | | To Have and Have Not (1944) 1/10 To Have and Have Not (1944)"A 40-something Humphrey Bogart and a novice named Lauren Bacall might have seemed like an odd pairing on paper, but their chemistry in TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT ignites the screen. Howard Hawks directs this classic about a jaded American fisherman (Bogart) who risks his life to help a group of French freedom fighters and a sultry young woman (Bacall) with whom he falls in love. The fascinating setting (Vichy-controlled Martinique during the Second World War), the source material (Ernest Hemingway's 1937 novel), and a screenplay co-written by a literary master (William Faulkner) all take a backseat to the on- and off-screen romance between the two legends. TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT is perhaps most memorable for the 19-year-old Bacall seducing Bogart (and audiences) with her lesson on whistling." - rottentomatoes.comDirector: Howard HawksScreenwriter: Jules Furthman, William FaulknerComposer: Franz Waxman Starring: Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Walter Brennan, Dolores Moran, Hoagy Carmichael, Marcel Dalio |
