This is my attempt at a huge jump on the ice as demonstrated by the legend that is Greg Rusedski on the hit TV show "Dancing on Ice" | | Greg Rusedski v Draper Wimbledon 1998 The men in black arrived to use their neuralizer on Greg for wearing a wristband. Greg was always seen as a Canadian by the media, and was often criticised for not being born in Britain, although he did have a British mother. He also married his British childhood sweetheart Lucy. And if you look at France, Yannick Noah was found in the Camaroons, and played for France in the Davis Cup, and he won the French Open title in 1983. France are now campaigning for any player of any nationality, to be trained by them to represent them and make them proud. These days nationality is not important.Greg deserves recognition for increasing the popularity of the sport of tennis within the UK. He excelled in 1997 reaching the US Open final. Unfortunately in 1998, just a few weeks before this match, damaged his ankle badly at Queens. I can still remember those excruciating screams. And I believe the set back of this injury ruined his career, due partly to the criticism of his coach Tony Pickard, and the negative publicity he received. It was a self fulfilling prophesy.Greg had a fantastic serve, and was great at the net, and as a left hander reminded me of John McEnroe, as at this time there were fewer serve and volley players, as the baseliners were ruling the courts. Of course though there is only one John McEnroe, but it was great to see Greg excel with that style of play at the time, as when John retired we thought we would never see him play again.I look forward to the day when serve and volley style of play returns as it is sadly missed.Thank the Lord we still have the seniors tour, and for now we still have John McEnroe and compatriots still playing. | | Greg Rusedski v Mark Draper After injuring his ankle Greg was playing tentatively and not running for the ball as much. However, even Scott Draper began to look worried as Greg upped his level of play after alterations to his splint. He had incredible talent, and was dangerous as John McEnroe said, when he was playing well. | | Tuck Greg, Tuck! The kids here today are great and I am here to help and give a little bit back. The University has one of the top facilities in the country in the UK Centre for Coaching Excellence: it is one of the highest accolades."It is fantastic to see so many parents and kids here as sports, including tennis, are very important and teach self-discipline. There are a lot of prospects in the UK at the moment and, at University level, there is still time to decide to go professional." |
