 | The Lives of Others trailer At once a political thriller and human drama, THE LIVES OF OTHERS begins in East Berlin in 1984, five years before Glasnost and the fall of the Berlin Wall and ultimately takes us to 1991, in what is now the reunited Germany. THE LIVES OF OTHERS traces the gradual disillusionment of Captain Gerd Wiesler (Ulrich Muhe, best known for his lead roles in Michael Haneke's FUNNY GAMES and as Dr. Mengele in Costa-Gavras' AMEN), a highly skilled officer who works for the Stasi, East Germany's all-powerful secret police. His mission is to spy on a celebrated writer and actress couple, Georg Dreyman (Sebastian Koch) and Christa-Maria Sieland (Martina Gedeck). | | Mikis Theodorakis, Costa Gavras - Z (1969) The scenes of Gavras' classic film which are scored with the music of Theodorakis. (I had to leave out a couple of them to keep the video under 10 minutes.) Based on a novel of Vasilis Vasilikos, "Z" is about the assasination (1963) of Grigoris Lambrakis, a distinguished athlete, doctor and politician, as well as an active pacifist and humanitarian. The film depicts the way para-state and paramilitary mechanisms operated in Greece and the efforts of an honest investigator against them. The film is based on a scandal that took place in Chile in 1973. Specifically, it is based on the disappearance of journalist Charles Horman. (Just for the record, the country is never referred to by name in the film, but its capital city, Santiago, is mentioned.) Horman had attempted to expose a conspiracy between the American and Chilean governments to overthrow Chilean president Salvador Allende. Unfortunately, he was later kidnapped by forces loyal to the conspirators, triggering a manhunt. It was later discovered that Horman had been executed when his body was discovered in a morgue. Jack Lemmon stars as Horman's father, Ed, and Sissy Spacek as Horman's wife, Beth. One of Costa-Gavras's most effective techniques in the film is the manner in which it is established to be based on a true story in the opening scene, although the ending scene states that the American government denies the existence of the events. Much like Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11", the film caused controversy for its portrayal of American interference in other countries' affairs, and was at one point banned in Chile because of its depiction of the Pinochet regime. (Speaking of Michael Moore, the overthrow of Allende and his replacement with Pinochet was mentioned in the "What a Wonderful World" montage in "Bowling for Columbine.") Nevertheless, Costa-Gavras was awarded the Palme ... | | Missing (part1) The film by Costa-Gavras based on a true story. | | Tom Berenger, Deborah Winger - "Betrayed" clip #4 From the excellent 1988 Costa-Gravas film. Also starring Deborah Winger. "Mild language caution.* IMDB site: www.imdb.com This is a really gripping film about an undercover agent (Deborah Winger) trying to infiltrate a white supremacist group. Berenger plays Gary, one of the suspected supremacists. Winger finds herself drawn to Gary. In this clip, Winger now has been utterly charmed by Gary, doubting that he could be anything sinister. Includes love scene (not explicit). Buy the movie on Amazon! It's really good, but has a disturbing theme (about racism and white supremacy) and some violence. |
