Al contrario, si scopre con piacere che nel lavoro di David Twohy (Pitch Black) questi elementi mancano del tutto e la storia è marcatamente psicologica. Si è da subito calati in un'atmosfera claustrofobica ed opprimente: ci troviamo infatti all'interno del sommergibile americano Tigershark, durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale. I membri dell'equipaggio si imbattono in tre naufraghi di una nave ospedale inglese: si tratta di due uomini, di cui uno ferito ed una donna, che a bordo dell'imbarcazione svolgeva l'incarico di medico. L'arrivo di quest'ultima viene visto dall'equipaggio come un cattivo segno del destino, sentimento legato all'antica superstizione marinaresca che vede la presenza di una donna a bordo come portatrice di sventura.
