The film was directed by Michael Cacoyannis and the title character was played by Anthony Quinn. The supporting cast included Alan Bates as a visiting Englishman. The theme, "Sirtaki" by Mikis Theodorakis, has become famous and popular as a song and as a dance (especially at parties). Several of the film's songs & instrumental pieces, with wise, poetic sayings from Zorba, gained cult status for the recorded & widely-released soundtrack. The movie was shot on location on the Greek island of Crete. Specific places featured include the town of Chania, the Apokoronas region and the Akrotiri peninsula. The famous scene, in which Quinn's character dances the Sirtaki, was shot on the beach of the village of Stavros. The movie won three Academy Awards. Lila Kedrova won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, Vassilis Fotopoulos won the Oscar for Best Art Direction in black-and-white set decoration, and Walter Lassally won the Oscar for Best Cinematography in black-and-white. Lassally's Oscar is shown in Tavern Christiana in Stavros. Quinn received the nomination for best actor in a leading role and Michael Cacoyannis received three nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Writing, and Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium. | | Bertie & Elizabeth - 1 of 11 Bertie & Elizabeth is a 2002 television film produced by Carlton Television. The film explores the relationship between King George VI and his wife Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (Queen Elizabeth) from their very first meeting to the King's death in the winter of 1952. Bertie and Elizabeth was commissioned especially for the Golden Jubilee of Elizabeth II and was first broadcast on ITV1 on 4 June 2002, only two months after the death of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. The film begins with the initial meeting between the then Duke of York and Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon and then moves on through their courtship, marriage, succession to the throne after the abdication of Edward VIII, and World War II. The film portrays King George VI's struggle to overcome his stammer, the fear he felt towards his father, and the punishing stress the King was placed under during the abdication crisis of 1936. King George VI is played by James Wilby, and Queen Elizabeth by Juliet Aubrey. There are also appearances from Sir Alan Bates and Dame Eileen Atkins, who play King George V and Queen Mary respectively. | | Spartacus (2004) - Salva Nos - Mediaeval Baebes Spartacus is a 2004 television adaptation of the Howard Fast novel, made by USA Network Pictures and distributed by USA Cable Entertainment LLC and Universal Home Entertainment. It was directed by Robert Dornhelm and produced by Ted Kurdyla from a teleplay by Robert Schenkkan based on the novel by Howard Fast. The plot, setting, and costumes are nearly identical to those of the Stanley Kubrick 1960 version. However, this adaptation covers practically all the historical inaccuracies of the 1960 film (two of the more noticeable omissions being "I'm Spartacus!" and Spartacus' and his wife's reunion after the battle). The movie is shown as a story a woman narrates to her son, which are later revealed to be Spartacus' wife and son. A curious detail about the film is that Spartacus' son is born exactly at the moment Spartacus dies in battle. Goran Visnjic as Spartacus Alan Bates as Antonius Agrippa Angus Macfadyen as Marcus Crassus Rhona Mitra as Varinia Ian McNeice as Lentulus Batiatus Paul Kynman as Crixus James Frain as David Henry Simmons as Draba Ross Kemp as Cinna Ben Cross as Titus Glabrus, based of Gaius Claudius Glaber Niall Refoy as Publius Maximus, based on Publius Varinius George Calil as Pompey Magnus Richard Dillane as Julius Caesar Hope You Enjoy |
