Der Name der Band ist dem Titel des Buches The Autobiography of a Super-Tramp (dt. Supertramp. Autobiographie eines Vagabunden) von W.H. Davies entliehen. Der typische Klang der meisten Supertramp-Kompositionen wurde erzeugt durch das synkopische Spiel auf einer Wurlitzer A-200 (elektrisches Klavier). Eine individuelle Note entstand auch durch den Einsatz der Klarinette, die in der Rock- und Popmusik ansonsten selten verwendet wird.
