Elle est parue en 1973 sur l'album Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid, bande originale du film du même nom, réalisé par Sam Peckinpah, dans lequel Bob Dylan interprète un personnage énigmatique, « Alias ». C'est une chanson triste et mélancolique, qui intervient dans le film quand meurt un shérif ou l'un de ses adjoints (d'où le sens des paroles, et le « badge » qui désigne en fait l'étoile du shérif). Le refrain est fameux : Knock-knock-knockin' on heaven's door repris (environ quatre fois). Sur scène, Bob Dylan a souvent joué le morceau de façon différente de la version studio, notamment dans les albums suivants : Before the Flood, The 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration et MTV Unplugged.
