 | The Egyptian (1954), Edmund Purdom, Gene Tierney The Egyptian (1954), Edmund Purdom, Bella Darviwith Jean Simmons, Victor Mature, Gene TierneyThis segment: Scenes with Gene Tierney. This is very loosely based on The Story of Sinuhe, which does include references to Aten but was written many centuries before the 18th dynasty. Sets, costumes, and props from this film were bought and re-used by Cecil B. DeMille for The Ten Commandments. As the events in that story take place seventy years after those in The Egyptian, this re-use creates an unintended sense of continuity. The commentary track on the Ten Commandments DVD points out many of these re-uses. Only two actors, Mimi Gibson and John Carradine, and a handful of extras, appeared in both pictures. The Prince Aly Khan was a consultant during filming, he was engaged to Gene Tierney. | | Gene Tierney - Laura Theme Music, and Images Images of Gene Tierney, and leading men, accompanied by David Raksin's hauntingly, beautiful music composed for the film noir classic "Laura". Ironically, Ann's own husband is a reknown psychiatrist, but knows nothing his wife's illness. Korvo entrances her, and works his evil "cure" during her husbands long absences while on lecture tours.Nice touches in the original -- The significance of the manikin positioned behind Gene Tierney as she stands in front of the department store window; and the "framed" portrait hanging over the fire place near the end.Directed by Otto PremingerScreenplay: Ben Hecht, Andrew Solt Novel: Guy EndoreCast in this video...Gene Tierney...Ann SuttonJosé Ferrer...David KorvoIan MacDonald...Store Detective HoganHarry...Ted JordanOther stars in this film...Richard Conte...Dr. William SuttonCharles Bickford...Lt. Henry Fonda, Gene Tierney Edited video clips from "The Return of Frank James." 1940. Directed by Fritz Lang.Plot:After Bob Ford shoots Jessie James in the back, Frank James assumes that he and his brother Charlie Ford will be tried for murder. A court rules for the Ford brothers, since Jessie was wanted 'dead or alive'. Enraged by the court's decision, and what he perceives as a miscarriage of justice, Frank hunts down the now famous Ford brothers. He catches up with them at a theater during a dramatic reenactment of the shooting in which they star in a totally fraudulent account of the killing. Gene's "Belle" is an antithetical, implausible "bandit queen"?her lively spirit is overwhelmingly laced with sweet and feminine qualities that are difficult to ascribe to the real Belle Starr [Myra Maybelle Shirley Reed Starr, 1848-1889], whose image and lifelong criminal associations bespoke anything but "sugar and spice." This film's action takes place near the junction of Civil War's end and Reconstruction's beginning. Randolph Scott plays Sam Starr, the Confederate-sympathizing guerilla fighter, ambitious outlaw, and?eventually?Belle's husband. In real life, Sam Starr was a Cherokee Indian. Tobacco-spittin' Chill Wills plays, amusingly, another historical character, Blue Duck. On the other side, Dana Andrews convincingly portrays an earnest young Union Major Thomas Grail. Louise Beavers "pours out maple syrup" as Belle's Mammy Lou. Director Irving Cummings (who also helmed many Shirley Temple and Betty Grable films) shot a very "dark" picture?and not only because more than a few significant scenes of "Belle Starr" occur "at night." The script?because it is co-written by Niven Busch ["Duel in the Sun"; "Pursued"]?is both melodramatic in style and malevolent in spirit; furthermore, as it is loosely plotted by the writer(s), so it is minimally rewarding for viewers who demand more and better. In this movie, the application of "Hollywood license" to historical fact may be assumed. The entertainment value of "Belle Starr" as a story is next to nothing. Its value as a showcase for the beauty of Gene Tierney is considerable. In this video, I've sought to uplift the material of "Belle Starr"?presumably, YouTube audiences will enjoy at least this much of it. Comments or questions are sincerely welcome; however, lewd or derogatory remarks will be sniped to death. If it hasn't occurred by the time you read this: would you like to see "Belle Starr" restored and released on DVD? Please petition the studio!
