 | In Memoriam: Brittany Murphy 1977 - 2009 Brittany Murphy was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on November 10, 1977. Her parents, Sharon Murphy and Angelo Bertolotti, divorced when she was two years old, and Murphy was raised by her mother in Edison, New Jersey, and later in Los Angeles, where they moved so Murphy could pursue an acting career. Murphy said her mother never tried to stifle her creativity, and she considered her mother a crucial factor in her later success: "When I asked my mom to move to California, she sold everything and moved out here for me. ... She always believed in me." Murphy's mother is of Irish and Eastern European descent and her father is Italian American. Murphy's father, a suspected mobster, has had numerous federal indictments and convictions stemming from the possession and distribution of narcotics. She was raised a Baptist and later became a non-denominational Christian. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Murphy landed her first job in Hollywood when she was age 14, starring as Brenda Drexell in the series Drexell's Class. She then went on to play Molly Morgan in the short-lived The Torkelsons spinoff Almost Home. Murphy also guest-starred on several television series, including Parker Lewis Can't Lose, Blossom and Frasier. She also had recurring roles on Sister, Sister; Party of Five and Boy Meets World. Russell Simmons, Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, TI, Nelly, Master P , and hosted by Cousin Jeff and Toure For all the criticism they receive, BET deserves credit for taking on this topic and broadcasting it as a special prime time event during the first big week of the new television season. The image of BET in the media and in the black community is often reduced to a caricature that fails to acknowledge the subtlety and nuance of BET's programming. But having said that, I'm not sure that one television series is quite enough to make amends for years of missed opportunities. I've been very critical of the business model initiated by BET's founder Bob Johnson, which amounted to little more than profit over programming. For years, BET was little more than music videos, syndicated TV shows, and late night infomercials. Now, under new leadership, the network has been trying -- sometimes in questionable ways -- to build original programming. What troubles me about BET today is the absence of timely news and public affairs programming. It's great that "Meet The Faith" airs on Sundays, but the show is taped so far in advance that it's impossible to be timely in response to new news. Even in the Bob Johnson days of the 90s, BET had a nightly news broadcast and a lively and current evening talk show with host Tavis Smiley. If we still had a daily news and talk show on BET, we wouldn't have to wait almost six months to have this ... |

 | Kansas City Wizards 2-1 Manchester United | Highlights United suffered their first defeat of the North America tour but major doubts remain over the legitimacy of Kei Kamara's first half winner as the Kansas City Wizards secured a 2-1 victory. Kamara had earlier set up Wizards captain Davy Arnaud to fire the home side ahead, before Dimitar Berbatov's penalty -- another debatable decision from the referee who controversially sent off Jimmy Conrad for his part in the incident -- drew the Reds level. Kamara then headed Ryan Smith's corner past Ben Amos, but replays were not conclusive regarding whether or not the whole ball had crossed the line. The result delighted large sections of the 52000 fans who packed into the impressive Arrowhead Stadium as the Wizards recorded a famous win. Sir Alex opted to field a relatively young side, including the likes of Ben Amos, Ritchie De Laet and Mame Biram Diouf, but ensured there was a sprinkling of experience with Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Dimitar Berbatov all starting. Nani made his first appearance of the tour having recovered from the collarbone injury which kept him out of the World Cup. The Portuguese winger was involved in United's first real attack on 10 minutes. After his free-kick was blocked the ball fell to Scholes who fired a typically well-struck effort goalwards which was well saved by Jimmy Nielsen down to his right.  | Eric Plutz plays Sabre Dance at Princeton University Chapel Princeton University Organist Eric Plutz plays a lively organ transcription of Aram Khachaturian's Sabre Dance from the ballet "Gayane" on the Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ at Princeton University Chapel. This performance is contained as one track of Eric Plutz's new Pro Organo audio CD, entitled "Carnival" - Pro Organo CD 7227, being released in November 2008. Eric Plutz's "Carnival" CD is a program of symphonic organ transcriptions, and includes many symphonic favorites, including Dvorak's "Carnival Overture" and Camille Saint-Saens' "Carnival of the Animals." In "Carnival of the Animals," Eric is joined by Princeton University Professor Emeritus John V. Fleming, as Professor Fleming reads the verses of Ogden Nash that correspond to the various musical movements of the Saint-Saens work. |
