 | Wimbledon Men Singles Final 2001 (Last Game "Ivanisevic serves to Championship") Im Jahr 1990 schaffte er seinen Durchbruch, ua erreicht er im Alter von 18 Jahren das Halbfinale von Wimbledon, dem Turnier, bei dem er seine größten Erfolge feierte. 1992 schaffte er es bis ins Finale, wobei er Ivan Lendl, Stefan Edberg und Pete Sampras besiegte, jedoch an Andre Agassi in 5 Sätzen scheiterte. Nach zwei weiteren Finalniederlagen gegen Pete Sampras (1994 und 1998) gelang ihm 2001 schließlich sein einziger Grandslamsieg. Für dieses Turnier erhielt er vom Veranstalter eine Wildcard, denn die damalige Ranglistenposition ließ ein Antreten im Hauptfeld nicht zu. Trotz starken Schulterschmerzen spielte Ivanisevic ein starkes Turnier. Er schlug ua Carlos Moya, den damals aufstrebenden US Amerikaner Andy Roddick und den Russen Marat Safin. Im Halbfinale kam es zum Duell gegen den favorisierten Lokalmadator Tim Henman. Das Spiel schien anfangs eine klare Angelegenheit für den Briten zu sein. Doch wegen diverser Regenunterbrechungen (2 Tage hat es geregnet), bekam Ivani?evi? unfreiwillig Erholungsphasen, die er zu nutzen wusste. Er drehte das Spiel und gewann mit 7:5, 6:7(6), 0:6, 7:6(5), 6:3. Im dramatischen Finale besiegte er den favorisierten Australier Patrick Rafter mit 6:3, 3:6, 6:3, 2:6, 9:7. Er ist neben Iva Majoli (French Open, Damen) der einzige Spieler, der für Kroatien einen Grandslam Titel holte. Seitdem gilt er in seiner Heimat als Volksheld. |
